Diabetes Management and Prevention Program
About
Our Diabetes Management and Prevention Program provides a comprehensive approach to diabetes education and is recognized by the American Diabetes Association. Our team of Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES) works closely with both adults and children who have diabetes or prediabetes to provide the tools necessary to manage their daily needs and live well.
A Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist is a healthcare professional who specializes in the management and prevention of diabetes. Our CDCES can partner with you to develop a plan and provide the knowledge, skills and support you need to effectively manage your diabetes or reduce your risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
We offer individual and group education sessions for people with diabetes, pre-diabetes and gestational diabetes. Education can be provided in-person or via telehealth (video or phone) as needed. Examples of topics typically addressed include:
- Healthy eating
- Being active
- Taking medication
- Monitoring
- Reducing risks
- Problem solving
- Healthy coping
Our Diabetes Management and Prevention Program provides services in multiple locations in Roanoke. Carilion Diabetes Management Programs are also available in Rocky Mount, the New River Valley, Giles and Lexington.
For insurance purposes, we may need a referral from your primary care physician or the clinician who manages your diabetes. Our services are typically covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most third-party payors. Patients can also apply for Carilion financial assistance to help cover the cost of our program.

Diabetes Prevention Program
One in three American adults has prediabetes. If you currently have prediabetes or other risk factors for type 2 diabetes, now is the time to make a change. Carilion’s Diabetes Prevention program can equip you with knowledge you need to help you take charge of your health.
The Diabetes Prevention program is a 12-month program. Sessions are held most weeks for the first four months. By meeting with a trained lifestyle coach, you will learn to eat healthy, add physical activity to your life, manage stress, stay motivated and solve problems that can get in the way of healthy changes.
We are able to offer this program for free to a limited number of participants. Ask your doctor today for more information about this program that can lead to a healthier life.
