Major Injury, Trauma & Surgery
What Makes Us Different?
Regaining function and movement after a major trauma, injury, or surgery can feel daunting. Carilion Clinic is the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, where the risk of death from injury is reduced by over 25% compared to non-trauma emergency departments. Carilion’s Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation team works closely with our clinicians in the trauma departments at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital to ensure that we can provide the highest level of care for these patients. According to a 2014 research study by Dobson DaVanzo & Associates, LLC, patients who receive care in a specialized rehabilitation hospital - like Carilion’s Inpatient Rehabilitation – have better long-term outcomes than those treated in nursing facilities.
Our comprehensive program is individually tailored to each patient’s needs, but may include mobility skills, strengthening and coordination, communication and swallowing, daily activities such as dressing and bathing, strategies for returning home, and caregiver education and training.

Stroke
What Makes Us Different?
The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association recommend that patients recovering from a stroke be treated in an inpatient rehabilitation hospital whenever possible. Our comprehensive stroke rehab program is designed to help improve your mobility, advance your physical functioning, and increase your independence all while enhancing your quality of life.
Research published by JAMA in 2019 shows that individuals who have had a stroke and receive care at an inpatient rehabilitation facility like Carilion’s Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation have greater improvement, fewer complications, and are able to go home more quickly than those treated at nursing facilities or other care settings.
In May of 2023, Carilion Clinic was recognized as the first healthcare system in the region to receive Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and the American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Stroke Certification. This certification recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care for stroke patients.
