Visitor Guidelines

Carilion Clinic has returned to our normal visitation policy at our facilities.

Guidelines Overview

To ensure the health and safety of patients and caregivers, all visitors are asked to follow these guidelines:

  • Masks are recommended but optional for patients and their visitors.
  • Do not visit if you are sick, have COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to someone with known or suspected COVID-19 within the past 10 days.
  • Review the entrance policy signs located at every entrance to ensure it’s safe to visit.
  • See the restrictions below for visiting COVID-positive or patient under investigations of COVID-19.

Visiting Hours

Visiting hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for all hospitals except those listed below. Hours may change for certain units or situations.

Carilion New River Valley Medical Center visiting hours are 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. until further notice.

Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital visiting hours are noon to 9 p.m. until further notice.

Visiting Confirmed or Suspected COVID-19 Patients

For adult patients, one visitor is allowed. Visitors may switch out. Exceptions will be made for end-of-life care, medical necessity, pediatric patients and patients in labor.

For pediatric patients, two parents or guardians may be present and must stay with the patient in their room throughout the patient’s stay. Neonatal ICU policies for confirmed or suspected COVID-19 may vary. Please check with your care team’s leadership for more information.

Visitors for confirmed or suspected COVID-19 patients must follow these guidelines:

  • Visitors must check in with the patient’s assigned nurse before entering the patient’s room.
  • Visitors must agree to wear personal protective equipment without exception at all times and follow hand hygiene best practices.
  • Visitors may only visit the COVID-19 patient and must remain in the patient’s room during the entire visit. Visitors may not travel to other areas of the facility (for example, the cafeteria or gift shop).
  • Visitors may not eat or drink while in patient rooms.

Exceptions will be managed at the unit leadership level.
