Sealants are thin plastic coatings placed on children’s teeth to “seal” the grooves of the teeth and prevent food from causing tooth decay. Sealants create a protective shield over the surface of permanent teeth helping prevent cavities.
SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride) is a topical liquid that is brushed on a cavity to stop additional tooth decay. SDF helps delay more extensive procedures. Silver kills bacteria, and fluoride keeps teeth stronger.
Appointments are not necessary but are strongly encouraged. Parent or guardian must be present. Spanish language translation services will be available.
*Some exclusions apply. See FAQs for additional information.

What Are Sealants?
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the grooves of the chewing surfaces of back teeth to protect them from cavities. Most tooth decay in children and teens starts on these surfaces. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth from tooth decay by keeping germs and food particles out of these grooves. Applying sealants does not require drilling or removal of tooth structure. Sealant should not be applied on any molars if large caries (cavities) are present.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a treatment option that stops small- to medium-sized cavities from progressing. It is an antimicrobial liquid that is applied directly onto cavities with a small brush. It does not require drilling or removal of tooth structure. The treated cavity will turn a dark brown or black color, but healthy teeth will not stain. We will only be applying SDF on cavities located on BACK teeth, not front teeth. SDF should not be applied if:
- your child has an allergy to silver
- your child has ulcerative gingival conditions
- your child has large cavities with deep decay
- your child shows signs of inflammation/stomatitis
If SDF accidentally gets on the skin or lip, there may be a temporary stain that will disappear on its own within a few days. While SDF helps to stop tooth decay, your child may still require additional dental treatments, including fillings, crowns, or tooth extraction. Without treatment after SDF application, your child may experience the continued breakdown of the tooth and develop additional symptoms, including tooth pain.
Fluoride Varnish
Fluoride Varnish is a topical, colorless gel applied directly onto teeth in order to prevent cavities. It contains fluoride, a mineral used to help strengthen tooth enamel.
Dental Cleaning
Dental cleanings are recommended at least 2 times a year in order to remove plaque and tartar buildup from underneath the gum line. This can help prevent gum disease such as Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease.
