Sinus surgery

Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery

Endoscopic sinus surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia (asleep). During the surgery: The sinus surgeon inserts an endoscope — a thin camera rod with a light at the end — into one nostril and uses it to magnify and visualize the sinus tissues.

Endoscopic Pituitary Surgery

Endoscopic pituitary surgery is the most common way to remove pituitary tumors. Your pituitary gland sits at the bottom of your brain, just above the inside of your nose and controls most of the hormones in your body. During surgery an endoscope (a thin, stiff tube that has a microscope, light and camera inside) is put into your nose. The camera lets the surgeon see what's happening on a TV screen while using other special tools through the endoscope to take out the tumor.

Radiation therapy

Radiation Therapy

In radiation therapy, radiation is directed through the skin and skull to the tumour and surrounding tissue. It may be used to treat pituitary gland tumours that are not completely removed by surgery or when the tumour comes back after surgery. It can also be used when surgery isn't an option. External radiation therapy works slowly on pituitary gland tumours. It can take months or even years before tumour growth and hormone levels are completely controlled.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Treatments may include pituitary hormone replacement, in which hormones are given to replace hormones not being produced by the pituitary gland. These include cortisol, thyroid hormone, vasopressin, sex hormones and growth hormone.

CyberKnife

Stereotactic Radiosurgery/CyberKnife

CyberKnife uses stereotactic body radiation therapy, delivering precise doses of radiation with extreme accuracy—accounting for tumor or patient movement in real-time. The robot moves and bends around the patient to deliver radiation doses from thousands of unique beam angles, significantly expanding the possible positions to concentrate radiation to the tumor while minimizing dose to surrounding healthy tissue.

Acromegaly

Explaining growth hormone

Prompt treatment is needed to avoid serious illness.

Acromegaly is a rare condition where the body produces too much growth hormone, causing body tissues and bones to grow more quickly. Over time, this leads to abnormally large hands and feet, and a wide range of other symptoms. Acromegaly is usually diagnosed in adults aged 30 to 50, but it can affect people of any age. Drugs can reduce the effects of growth hormone. If needed, surgery and radiation may be used to remove tumor cells.

Cushing's Syndrome

Treatment options are available.

Learn more about why we produce cortisol.

Cushing's syndrome is a disorder that occurs when your body makes too much of the hormone cortisol over a long period of time. Cortisol is sometimes called the “stress hormone” because it helps your body respond to stress. Cortisol also help to maintain blood pressure, regulate blood glucose, also called blood sugar. If a tumor is causing Cushing syndrome, surgery to remove it may be needed. In some cases, radiation therapy or medicine to control cortisol production might be options.
