Hydrocephalus

Shunt

Ventriculostomy, or shunt, is a neurosurgical procedure that involves creating a hole within a cerebral ventricle for drainage. It is most commonly performed on those with hydrocephalus. It is done by surgically penetrating the skull, dura mater, and brain such that the ventricular system ventricle of the brain is accessed.

Endoscopy

Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy

This alternative surgical procedure creates a bypass for the cerebrospinal fluid in the head that eliminates the need for a shunt. It is helpful only to people with hydrocephalus caused by a blockage of the flow of cerebrospinal fluid.

Congenital Hydrocephalus

Abnormal Accumulation of Cerebrospinal Fluid

When does hydrocephalus develop?

Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the ventricles of the brain. Congenital hydrocephalus is present at birth and may be caused by either events or influences that occur during fetal development, or genetic abnormalities. In rare cases, congenital hydrocephalus may not cause symptoms in childhood but only manifest in adulthood.
