
Can Video Assisted Therapy Replace In-Person Occupational Therapy after Hand Surgery?
This study is designed to determine if an at-home therapy program of pre-recorded instructional videos can effectively replace in-person therapy after CMC arthroplasty.

Protocol Description
This is a prospective, randomized, controlled, non-inferiority study to examine the effectiveness of our novel at-home therapy regimen in comparison to current standard of care: in-person therapy.

Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Primary CMC arthroplasty (CMC 25447)
- Access to a smartphone, computer, etc. with a 5.5-inch or larger screen
Exclusion Criteria
- Bilateral procedures
- Revision procedures
- Any concomitant procedures, except MCP fusion, CTS release and thumb trigger-finger release
- Artificial CMC joint replacement
- Non-native English speakers
Primary Investigator
Peter Apel, M.D., Ph.D., is a pediatric and adult hand surgeon who also specializes in brachial plexus and peripheral nerve surgery. He is also an associate professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine on behalf of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Carilion Clinic.
