Utility of Single-Dose Oral Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Prevention of Surgical Site Infection in Dermatologic Surgery

Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

  • 18 years of age or older and presenting to Carilion Clinic Dermatology & Mohs surgery at Riverside 1 in Roanoke, Va.
  • Receiving Mohs surgery on ear, nose and/or lower leg (below the knee)
  • Willing and able to give informed consent

Exclusion Criteria

  • Use of an antibiotic (other than intervention) within 48 hours of the surgery
  • Unable to take cephalexin and clindamycin hydrochloride due to allergy or intolerance
  • Undergoing concurrent surgery to oral or nasal mucosa
  • Prosthetic joint surgery within 2 years and have been told they require antibiotic prophylaxis

Mariana A. Phillips, MD, is a Mohs micrographic surgery specialist with 21 years of clinical and research experience. She is an associate professor of medicine at the Virginia Tech Carilion Clinic School of Medicine. Dr. Phillips earned her bachelors degree in biology from Roanoke College and her medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine. She completed her dermatology residency at VCU Medical Center and subsequently completed a one-year fellowship in procedural dermatology and Mohs surgery at VCU. She currently serves as the section chief for Dermatology and as program director for the ACGME-accredited Dermatology Residency program at the Virginia Tech Carilion Clinic School of Medicine. Dr. Phillips is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology.
