Biography

Dr. Sullivan attended Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Vermont in 2008. Dr. Sullivan then served as a general obstetrician-gynecologist at North Country Hospital, a critical-access facility in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, for over 5 years. As one of only three OB-GYNs in a two-county region, he and his partners provided comprehensive women's healthcare to a community situated 80 miles from the nearest tertiary care center. Dr. Sullivan also gained expertise in obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound, developing a robust in-office imaging program for local patients. While in Vermont, Dr. Sullivan served in several medical staff leadership roles, including as director of his hospital's quality assurance committee and physician liaison to his hospital's information technology group. Dr. Sullivan joined the faculty at Carilion Clinic in early 2014, where his clinical focus is on outpatient women's health and inpatient OB/GYN care. He shares responsibility for oversight of women's ultrasound at Carilion's Riverside location. Dr. Sullivan enjoys training Carilion's residents, teaching Virginia Tech-Carilion medical students, and most importantly, helping his patients navigate both the routine and complex aspects of their obstetric and gynecologic care.

Dr. Sullivan was extremely thorough and I felt like he really listened to me and helped me make the best well-informed decision on birth control in the office. He looked into my medical history while I was in the office also to make sure he knew everything about my history before prescribing anything. He is very calming and made me feel very comfortable.

He was very knowledgable and spent time speaking with me and explaining things. Even so, I did feel as if some of my concerns were not taken seriously.

Can't say enough good things about my pregnancy-long experience with Dr. Sullivan. Frankly, he is among the first doctors I have felt respected by. He is exceptionally clear and transparent about his reasoning, knows and shares detailed information about current research and recommendations, and maybe most importantly listens and responds not-robotically to concerns. He's straight forward, and his approach has been a breath of fresh air after seeing providers (not at Carilion) who sometimes seem to think that just because you're having baby means you prefer to be talked to like one. Honestly, as my pregnancy ends, I am now thinking of other care providers (for general family medicine or other specialities) through a comparative lens after my experience here (that is, he and really all the OBs here have set the bar for me).

I don't have any more friends or family that will be having a baby, but if I did, I would definitely recommend them to him. I just hate that I might not see him every visit.

Dr. Sullivan is a wonderful physician. He is clear when communicating and takes time to answer my questions. I trust his opinion and am very confident that he will take excellent care of me as his patient. I very much appreciate him.

I thought that Dr. Sullivan was professional and friendly. But most of all gentle in every way. He realized that it had been a long time since I had seen a GYNECOLOGIST and he did his very best to ask questions about prior history with birthing and all Obgyn care that I had received in the past.
