Visitation Guidelines
During the current COVID-19 surge, we ask that patients sites only bring a visitor if necessary.
All visitors must adhere to the following:
- We recommend all visitors wear a mask for the duration of their visit. If visitors do not have a mask or do not have an appropriate mask, we canprovide you with one. Face masks with valves and face masks that are deemed offensive are not permitted at Carilion facilities.
- All visitation is dependent on the facility having adequate space to promote social distancing.
- Visitors may be asked to wait in vehicles at some locations.
- Visitors and patients will be screened when they arrive. Anyone who is sick may not accompany patients in our facilities.
- If an outpatient surgery visitor fails screening, the surgery may be rescheduled.
- At some facilities, visitors may be given a color-coded wristband or sticker to identify them as approved visitors for the day.
- Visitor may include Case Manager or Care Coordinator.

Guidelines may change based on facility and community conditions and at the discretion of each facility. Requests for exceptions should be routed through the practice manager.
Adult Primary Care Clinics
- At the discretion of each facility, two visitors may accompany a patient.
Adult Specialty Clinics
- At the discretion of each facility, two visitors may accompany a patient.
Pediatric Outpatient and Specialty Clinics
- Two parents or guardians may accompany a patient.
Audiology
- At the discretion of the facility:
- One adult visitor may accompany adult patient.
- Up to 2 parents or legal guardians may accompany pediatric patient. Only one may accompany the child in the audio booth.
- No siblings/children may accompany a patient due to the nature of audiology testing environment and space restrictions.
Orthopaedics
Adult patient:
- At the discretion of each facility, one visitor may accompany a patient.
Pediatric patient:
- One parent or guardian may accompany a pediatric patient.
Outpatient Surgeries and Procedures
For outpatient surgeries and procedures requiring sedation or anesthesia discharging on the same day:
- At the discretion of each facility, one visitor may accompany the patient.
Rehabilitation Services
Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy:
- At the discretion of each facility, one visitor may accompany a patient.
Laboratory Services
- At the discretion of each facility, one visitor may accompany a patient.
Imaging Services
Diagnostic Radiology, Interventional Radiology, MRI, CT and Nuclear Medicine:
- At the discretion of each facility, one visitor may accompany the patient.
Infusion Centers
- No visitors unless staff determines special assistance is required, or the physician has asked the patient to bring a responsible adult.
