VIRS
Carilion’s Violent Injury - Recovery & Support Program (VIRS) was launched in June 2023 and is dedicated to helping patients, aged 10 years and older, seen at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, who have experienced an intentional violent injury including gunshot wounds, stabbing, or assault. This free program is a voluntary Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program (HVIP) that provides comprehensive case management services designed to promote physical and emotional recovery for those who are injured. Our goal is to combine the efforts of our medical staff with trusted community partners to ensure that those affected receive the support, treatment, and resources they need to heal and to create positive changes in their lives.
Our Violence Intervention Specialists work closely with patients from day one and are with them every step of the way after, including in their homes and communities. Our team will develop, together with patients, an individualized service plan to address goals including, but not limited to safety planning, navigation of the healthcare system, and coordinating with the patient’s medical care team. Other trauma-informed services may include:
- Job coaching
- Mentoring
- Education about recovery and healing
- Community Referrals
- Applications for medical insurance enrollment
- Accompaniment to aftercare appointments
- Connections to outpatient mental health professionals and other services
- Connections to educational resources
After enrollment, patients will continue to receive ongoing care as well as supportive services within their community for up to one year, ensuring they have the resources they need to keep them safe. VIRS is committed to strengthening our neighborhoods and providing patients as well as their support systems with the services needed to reduce re-injury rate and ultimately break the cycle of violence.
