Previous Residents
Andrew Tarasidis, Pharm.D.
Having grew up in the Christiansburg area and attended The Virginia Military Institute and The Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy I have had the privilege to see the different regional needs across Appalachia. Being the first resident for this program has given me insight into what advances can be accomplished within the community pharmacy setting. My passion in pharmacy is working with the underserved and misrepresented patients in this region.
I am currently a Clinical Pharmacist within Carilion’s retail pharmacy focusing on smoking cessation, patient affordability, and substance use disorder.
Research Project Title: Opioid Education and Safe Disposal in The Community Pharmacy Setting: An Observational Study
Stephanie Herward, Pharm.D.
Stephanie was born and raised in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, a rural area devastated by the Opioid Epidemic. Having an older sister with Substance Use Disorder, Stephanie decided at the young age of 15 she wanted to become a pharmacist to help make a difference in her community. With her decision unwavered, she attended West Virginia University for her undergraduate studies and then graduated from WVU School of Pharmacy in 2020. After graduation she went on to complete a PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency with Carilion Clinic in Christiansburg, VA which specialized in Ambulatory Care, Opioid Stewardship and Substance Use
Disorder. She currently works for Care Connections Rx, a company contracted with clinics throughout Virginia doing Chronic Care Management and Medicare Annual Wellness Visits for patients. Stephanie now resides in Christiansburg, VA with her husband Ethan, dog Harper, and their first baby due in January.
Research Project Title: The Effect of Medication Synchronization and Disease State Counseling on Health Outcomes in Patients with Diabetes in a Community Pharmacy Setting
Catie (Sohyun) Park, PharmD.
Catie Park is a native of Charlottesville, Virginia having completed her undergraduate work at the University of Virginia and Doctorate of Pharmacy at the Virginia Commonwealth University College of pharmacy. As a Resident with the Carilion Clinic Community-Based Pharmacy Residency she was able to pursue her passions of vaccination education and implementing new services within our community pharmacies. She was integral in developing the workflow for a Long-Acting Injection clinic, pharmacist directed Hepatitis C treatment clinic, and development of a system wide tobacco cessation clinic. Her passions led her to accept a clinical pharmacist position providing pharmacy services to support Carilion Mental Health's Substance Use clinics as well as taking the time to teach pharmacy students key aspects of Substance Use Treatment at the Appalachian College of Pharmacy. In her free time, she likes to take pictures of her cat and travel around the world.
Research Project Title: Impact of Community-Based Pharmacy Interventions on Shingles Vaccination
Thomas R. Schmitt, Pharm.D.
Born in Roanoke, Virginia, Thomas (Tommy) Schmitt witnessed firsthand the positive impact that Carilion had on his community. After introduction to the pharmacy profession through local role models, Thomas made the decision to undergo an accelerated fast track program at Shenandoah University where he was named a Presidential Scholar. Upon completion of this program, Thomas earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Shenandoah’s Bernard J Dunn School of Pharmacy. While undergoing his program, he developed a passion for treating substance use disorders and has worked diligently to aid and improve his community. His professional interests include addiction medicine, ambulatory care, leadership and education. In his spare time, Thomas enjoys spending time with family, chess and outdoor recreation such as hiking, caving, men's softball and basketball.
