Six Ways Exercise Is Good for Your Mental Health, Too

Article by News Team on April 24, 2024
You know that exercise strengthens your muscles and your heart, but did you know it also has a huge impact on your emotional and mental well-being?

“Regular exercise is one of the best ways to improve your quality of life,” says Mike McInnis, Fitness and Aquatics Manager at Carilion Wellness. “Participating in regular exercise can have significant physical, emotional, and mental health benefits.”

Here are six ways that Mike says adding exercise into your daily routine can help your mental health:

1) Reduces Stress

One of the most well-known ways exercise can help is through stress relief. Just a walk around the block can help reduce physical tension as well as feelings of stress and anxiety.

2) Reduces Feelings of Anxiety and Depression

Working up a sweat releases endorphins that can make you feel happier, and the boost to your mood can last long after you finish your workout.

3) Increases Energy

Even though you spend energy while exercising, you’ll actually feel more alert and attentive afterward. Penciling in some kind of healthy movement during your day is a good way to beat those afternoon slumps!

4) Increases Productivity

After you exercise, you may find that you get more done at work or at home, thanks to a boost in energy and focus. It’s a great way to refresh your mind!

5) Improves Brainpower

The parts of your brain that control your memory and your ability to learn new things are positively changed by regular exercise. As you age, those areas of the brain naturally start to decline, and many studies have shown that regular exercise can reduce some of the effects of aging, including reducing your risk of dementia.

6) Improves Sleep

One of the most critical parts of your well-being is getting enough good quality sleep. Exercise helps with that, too! By keeping your workout routine going, you’ll likely reduce the time it takes to fall asleep, increase the amount of time you’re able to stay asleep and enjoy better quality sleep.
