Sexual Assault: Tips on Staying Safe

Article by News Team on June 4, 2021
Sexual assault is an unfortunate reality that does not discriminate. In part two of our sexual assault series, we will take a closer look at protecting yourself. While it can be an uncomfortable topic, knowing how to protect yourself against sexual assault is an important step in personal safety. Check out the tips below from Sexual Assault Response and Awareness, Inc., a sexual assault crisis center for the Roanoke, VA area.

In General...

  • Stay alert. Observe your environment at all times.
  • Know your neighborhood. For example, know what businesses are open late that could serve as shelter.
  • Trust your gut feelings.

At Home...

  • Make your house look and sound occupied. Install and use lights at all entrances.
  • Install and use peephole.
  • Leave the radio or TV on when you are out.
  • Notify a trusted neighbor if you are taking a trip and ask them to collect mail, papers, etc.
  • Do not pin notes to the door.
  • Keep a light on at night.
  • If you live alone, list only your first initial and last name on door, directory and mailbox. Put a fake second name on the mailbox.
  • Never open the door to a stranger. If a salesman or repairman comes to the door, ask to see identification or call the company for verification.
  • Before going to the door, yell "I'll get it (Fred, Pam, Honey, etc.)," so that the person will think you are not alone.

On Foot...

  • When possible, don't walk alone.
  • Avoid taking shortcuts through vacant lots or parking lots.
  • Vary your route going to the store and coming home.
  • If you think you are being followed, turn around and look.
  • Let anyone behind you know that you see them.
  • Don't be afraid to be rude to someone who is hassling you.
  • Never wind purse straps around your wrists or neck (if grabbed, you can be pulled down more easily).
  • Carry your purse on the side away from the street. If you are approached or grabbed on the street, make a scene, be loud and try to run away. Attract as much attention as you can.
