How To Have a Hygge Winter

Article by News Team on December 17, 2025
Hygge: a cozy quality that makes a person feel content and comfortable.

Life can feel like a lot sometimes. Between work, school, family, or everyday responsibilities, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. On top of that, there’s often pressure to do more and do it better.

While working hard and improving yourself can be good things, it’s just as important for your mental health to slow down. Taking time to connect with your surroundings—and with the people you care about—matters.

As we settle in for the winter, it just might be the perfect time to take a page from our Danish friends and bring a little more hygge into our lives.

What is hygge?

Pronounced "hoo-guh,” hygge is a mindful feeling of comfort, contentment, and connection with family and friends.

“Hygge is about creating simple habits and traditions that reinforce comfort, satisfaction, and a sense of belonging,” explains Robert L. Trestman, PhD, MD, with Carilion Clinic Mental Health.

It’s also a big part of Danish culture. Denmark is considered one of the happiest places in the world, so they must be on to something!

How can you add hygge to your life?

Hygge is about keeping things simple, making your surroundings cozy, and connecting with those you care about.

Dr. Trestman suggests a few easy ways to bring hygge into your daily routine:

  • Light a candle to create a calm mood as you settle in on dark winter evenings
  • Enjoy a cup of coffee while video chatting with family or friends who live far away
  • Bundle up and go for a walk, taking in and appreciating the things around you

How can hygge help you?

Slowing down doesn’t mean you’re being lazy. It gives you space to reconnect with yourself and the people you love.

“Social support and resilience have long been recognized as critical elements in health,” says Dr. Trestman. “Building self-care, comfort, and connection into our routines helps protect us from stress and reminds us of what truly matters.”

Are you ready to give hygge a try? Pull on some cozy socks, wrap up in a warm blanket, and curl up on the couch by the fire. Add a pet for extra cuddles, invite someone you love to join you, or simply enjoy the peaceful quiet of a winter day.

If you’re struggling with your mental health and it feels like more than just the “winter blues,” reach out to your family doctor.
