4 Tips to Prevent Drowning This Summer

Article by News Team on June 12, 2024
Drowning isn’t the dramatic, splashy scene you see on screen. It’s often silent and can happen in the blink of an eye.

4 Tips to Prevent Drowning

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that over 4,000 unintentional drowning deaths happen in the U.S. each year. Drowning is also the leading cause of death among children ages 1-4.

“Drowning doesn’t happen like it does in the movies where someone is splashing and flailing and screaming for help. It’s quiet and it’s quick,” says Ottilia Lewis, Carilion Clinic trauma outreach coordinator.

That’s why it’s important to stay alert this summer. Ottilia suggests following these tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe in the water:

1. Never Swim Alone

Always bring a buddy when you swim or choose a location with a lifeguard. Having a friend with you ensures that someone is there to help or get help if needed.

2. Keep an Eye on Kids

Vigilance is key when it comes to kids and water. Be sure to watch them at all times. If you’re in the water with them, try to stay within arm’s reach. Keeping close means you can act quickly if they need help.

3. Pick Bright Swimsuits

The color of your child’s swimsuit can make a big difference. “A lot of the bathing suits we see on the market can be pretty blues and greens to match that summer vibe. But when tested, those colors blend into the bottom of a pool or a body of water,” Ottilia says.

Instead, she suggests putting your child in bright neon colors so you can spot them quickly during an emergency.

4. Know Your Limits

Be honest about your swimming abilities. “Your physical fitness and any medical conditions you might have could affect your ability to get out of a water-related emergency,” explains Ottilia. Knowing your limits can help you avoid dangerous situations and enjoy the water safely.

By following these tips, you can help make sure everyone has a fun and safe time in the water this summer.
