Program Overview

This is a 12-month interprofessional Wilderness Medicine fellowship for NPs/PAs. It is embedded in the Physician Fellowship in Wilderness Medicine. It is designed to help graduates obtain opportunities, experiences and education support to excel as leaders in the field of Wilderness Medicine.

To those seeking advanced training and experience in the field of Wilderness Medicine. This unique, intensive program will build upon the strength of our highly successful PA and NP practice already in place.

Mission, Goals and Strengths

Graduates of this one-year fellowship program will possess substantial skills, knowledge, and competencies required in the field of Wilderness Medicine.

  • To educate and train highly motivated NPs and PAs in the challenging and diverse knowledge base and skills required for excellence in clinical practice in wilderness medicine.
  • To offer unique opportunities for  NPs and PAs to better develop their ability to provide excellent patient care in low-resource, remote and austere environments.
  • To provide NPs and PAs with further education, and specialized clinical and professional wilderness medicine experiences in an interprofessional framework.

Curriculum

This dynamic program includes didactic instruction and clinical training components that two fellows will complete over 12 months. Orientation will be approximately 6 weeks long.

Clinical time will be spent in various departments of Carilion Clinic, under the supervision and direction of Carilion faculty.  Fellows will be working alongside resident physicians, attending physicians, NPs and PAs, in all sections of the emergency department.

Work 1,200 clinical hours at a Carilion facility as an NP or PA. Time will be split between Carilion Clinic emergency departments or urgent care based on experience.

Didactic Sessions

Didactics include, but are not limited to:

  • Emergency department education conference
  • Wilderness Medicine specific Journal club
  • Case based simulation
  • Procedure simulation
  • Certification courses: Fellows will become certified in ACLS, AWLS, FCCS, PALS and ATLS.

Admission Requirements

Graduation from an accredited PA/NP program, two years of postgraduate clinical experience, board-certified, ability to obtain Virginia Medical License and be credentialed at Carilion Clinic.

  • The fellowship starts August 1st and is 12 months in duration.
