Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship
About
Program Overview
The Carilion Clinic – Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship is a brand new one-year fellowship program under the direction of program director Thomas Shuler, M.D.
Carilion Clinic hosts a busy level one trauma center in Southwest Virginia. We serve a population of over one million people within a ten thousand square mile footprint with our fair share of pediatric and geriatric patients. There is a high volume of multiply injured/polytrauma patients with complex and general fracture patterns. Our department has 5 traumatologist attendings trained at notable trauma fellowship programs including the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Harvard Combined Program, Carolinas Medical Center, Saint Louis University, and Tampa General Hospital. We implemented a new trauma fellowship program due to the high clinical volume, increasing faculty, and abundant educational opportunities experienced at our facilities.
Our program currently offers two non-accredited positions with the intent to receive ACGME accreditation in the future. The fellowship will be a one-on-one mentorship model with the goal of developing the fellows in all aspects of patient focused quality care including clinical and surgical skills, and research. In addition to contributing to the orthopaedic trauma team, fellows will participate in resident education and produce a minimum of one research study of publishable quality.
Virginia Tech Carilion Partnership
Carilion Clinic is closely associated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, now a college of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, both located only blocks away from the Institute for Orthopaedics and Neurosciences. Our strong academic curriculum will ensure a robust knowledge of the clinical and scientific principles guiding management of trauma conditions.
