Program Overview

This is a one-year, high-volume program focused on degenerative spine conditions and spinal deformity in both adult and pediatric populations.

The primary training site is Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, a regional tertiary and quaternary referral center for complex spine procedures and revisions. Additional experience is available at affiliated satellite hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.

Curriculum

Fellows gain extensive experience in a broad spectrum of orthopaedic spine surgery, including, but no limited to:

  • Minimally invasive spine surgery, including fusions
  • Decompressions and discectomies
  • Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF)
  • Direct lateral interbody fusion (DLIF)
  • Oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF)
  • Cervical disc arthroplasty
  • Cervical spine reconstruction
  • Pediatric and adult scoliosis and spinal deformity reconstruction
  • Complex osteotomies, including PSO, SPO, and VCR

Fellows benefit from:

  • High operative volume and case complexity
  • 1 – 1.5 days per week of outpatient clinic experience
  • Weekly protected research and academic time
  • At least one weekly conference
  • Mentorship toward completion of one publishable-quality research project

Residents and APPs take first call, allowing fellows to focus on operative, clinical, and academic development.

How to Apply

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed an accredited orthopaedic surgery residency, passed all 3 steps of the USMLE, and be eligible to obtain full medical licensure in the state of Virginia. Applicants must also be eligible for hospital privileges.

Foreign medical graduates are eligible if they've completed an accredited orthopaedic program and are permanent U.S. residents. Visa sponsorship isn't available.
