Mission, Goals and Strengths

  • Prepare NPs and PAs for a career in neurosciences as skilled and competent clinicians in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team
  • Provide NP and PAs with specialty education and training to be able to diagnose and manage a broad range of neurological conditions
  • Bridge the gaps in the availability of neurological care by leveraging PAs and NPs to provide excellent patient care and practice to the full extent of their licenses

Curriculum

This intensive 12-month program includes both didactic and clinical training in general neurology and various neurology subspecialities as well as related specialties. Orientation will be ~6 weeks in duration (EPIC, credentialing, billing and didactics).

Clinical Rotations

ACP fellows will rotate through the following specialty and subspecialty areas:

  • General Neurology (Inpatient and Outpatient)
  • Epilepsy Clinic and Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
  • Headache Clinic (Including training in Botox and occipital nerve block procedures)
  • Movement Disorders
  • Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology
  • Neuromuscular Disease
  • Inpatient Stroke and Stroke Continuity Clinic
  • Neurological testing (Including nerve conduction studies, electroencephalography, and Wada testing)
  • Electives (Neurosurgery, Hospitalist Service, Neuro-oncology, and Pediatric Neurology)

During clinical rotations, NP and PA fellows will work in various Carilion Clinic departments under the supervision and direction of Carilion faculty and NP and PA preceptors. Fellows will independently provide direct patient care to non-emergent patients and collaborate closely with neurology attendings in the care of critically ill neuro patients.

Didactic Sessions

Neurology NP and PA Fellows will attend the same core lectures as the Carilion Clinic Neurology residents which cover various neurological conditions that will be managed by fellows during this program. Fellows will review detailed neurological examination and be evaluated by attending neurologists and neurology preceptors.

Fellows will also participate in didactic sessions including, but not limited to:

  • Case-based discussions
  • Procedure simulations
  • Assigned readings
  • Certification courses offered: BLS, ACLS
  • Additional trainings offered: VNS Masterclass, in-person Botox training and online Botox Masterclass

How to Apply

Admission Requirements

Graduation from an accredited PA/NP program. To be competitive, applicants should have graduated with a minimum of 3.0 grade point average in their program. Academic performance will be considered in the selection process. Certified (or certification eligible) PA or NP in good standing. Completed applications will include personal statement, curriculum vitae, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation.

  • Transcripts from Undergraduate and PA/NP program
  • Three letters of recommendation (former preceptor, academic instructor/mentor, and additional reference at the applicant’s discretion)
  • CV including recreational and community service activities
  • Personal Statement: Discuss anticipated strengths that you bring to the fellowship as well as professional knowledge, skills and/or behavior that you wish to enhance and why you wish to complete a post-graduate fellowship in neurology (Maximum 500 words)
  • Copy of current PA or NP license or a letter stating when you are planning to take the licensing exam

  • Start Date: 120 days after credentialing paperwork is completed by the fellow
