Acting Internship - Family Medicine (FM4 902G-2 and FM4 902G-4)
Attendance: Students may not take time off on the start date but must attend check-in and system orientation with Visiting Student Affairs. See the attendance policy for details.
Location: CRMH or Carilion Clinic Family Medicine Roanoke/Salem or Southeast
Available: August – February
Duration: 2 or 4 weeks, starting Monday and ending Friday consistent with VTC FM Residency block schedules. Other dates will be considered based on availability.

- Letter of Intent from FM Chair/Advisor validating applicant's intent to pursue residency in FM
Overview: This elective is designed to engage fourth-year medical students in learning a high level of responsibility for inpatient and outpatient care from a unique Family Medicine approach. If rotating for 4 weeks, students will work in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. If rotating for 2 weeks, students will work in either the inpatient or outpatient settings. In the inpatient setting, students will work as part of the Family Medicine Inpatient Team with residents and an attending. In the outpatient setting, students will work in 1 of 2 residency Patient Centered Medical Home ambulatory sites with both residents and faculty.
The student will become progressively proficient and knowledgeable in the following:
- Evaluating Family Medicine patients either in the hospital or the residency clinic
- Developing and presenting an initial diagnostic and treatment plan for patients with acute issues and chronic diseases, including preventive care where appropriate
- Contributing to the ongoing management of assigned inpatients with appropriate data collection, analysis and presentation of patients
- Appropriately documenting care in the electronic medical record
- Discussing the how roles of multiple members of a Family Medicine health care team (e.g., pharmacy, nursing, social work, and allied health) interact and work together as a team in providing health care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings
