Connecting Your Medical Record to Healthcare Apps

This page has information about how to connect your medical record to a healthcare application (app) that allows you to store your personal health record.

Request Records

How can I request my medical record from Carilion to be shared with a medical records app?

First, you should register with the medical records app you want to use and follow the app’s instructions for enrollment.

The app vendor should be able to share with you whether they are registered with Carilion to share medical records requested by patients. If they do, the app should then ask you to authorize the app to send us a request on your behalf to connect your medical record.

After we receive the request, we will send you a message in MyChart.

You will need to log in to MyChart and confirm that you have requested to share your current medical record information with the selected medical records app vendor.

Secure Data

Will my medical record data be secure?

Carilion Clinic abides by the applicable federal and state standards to protect the privacy and security of your health information. Once we transfer your data to any third party, including medical records apps, the app vendor is responsible for the security of the data. The app vendor should be able to answer any questions you may have about their data security policies.

Shared Information

Does Carilion share this information with any medical records app if a patient requests it?

No. Medical records apps must register with Epic, our electronic medical record system, before we will share information, even if patients have requested it. If you ask for your medical record to be shared with an app that is not registered, we will not share this information.

Automatic Updates

Will my medical record automatically update or sync to the app when there are changes or updates, such as new lab results or medications?

No. Each time you wish to have your medical record updated in the app, you will need to submit a new request.

Endorsed Apps

Does Carilion Clinic endorse any specific medical records apps?

No. By law, we are required to share your medical record information if you request it to any medical records app vendors who follow a registration process and who attest that they meet certain standards.

How can I know a medical record app is safe to use?

Visit https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0018-understanding-mobile-apps for some information from the Federal Trade Commission to help you understand mobile apps.
