About

Program Overview

Carilion Clinic’s Faculty Internal Medicine department, staffed by a team of caring, committed and compassionate physicians, nurses, nurse practioners, pharmacists and other key health care providers, offers patients a wide array of services in an academic environment. We specialize in diagnosis and treatment of diseases that problematize the whole person, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, musculoskeletal issues and many others that patients will bring to their primary care health care team. Our experience also includes bariatric or weight loss medicine, the use of portable ultrasound to diagnose disease and other cutting-edge approaches to serving our patient. While we take care of a wide array of illness, we also know when to refer our patients to our thoughtful and helpful specialists, where our patients may benefit from their expertise.

In addition to clinical care, our department serves as an education site for training future internal medicine specialists through our supervision of internal medicine interns and residents. We also serve as mentors and role models for Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine students learning ambulatory medicine, representing the majority of their outpatient learning experiences. Our faculty play a key role in leading the curriculum for our students in the pre-clinical and well as clinical years.

Virginia Tech Carilion Partnership

Our providers partner daily with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, teaching and mentoring students at all stages of their medical education. Our educational endeavors span instruction in the basic sciences and patient-based learning blocks, clinical sciences and inter-professionalism domains. We provide a robust teaching curriculum on the inpatient faculty medicine patient care services and provide both longitudinal ambulatory care experience and internal medicine ambulatory care elective opportunities to students.

Carilion Clinic has a long-standing tradition of providing high-quality continuing medical education (CME) to physicians. Our team recognizes the importance of offering continuous learning opportunities to physicians throughout their careers. To this end, the Carilion Clinic's CME Program provides educational offerings and introduces new technology, educational techniques and updated information so that physicians may maintain, improve and acquire new knowledge and skills. Ultimately, CME favorably impacts the quality of health care by serving as a mechanism for continuous improvement.
