Department of Diagnostic Radiology

Our team of board-certified radiologists uses non-invasive scans to help diagnose and treat everything from injuries to complex medical conditions.

About

Program Overview

Diagnostic radiology uses advanced imaging modalities to treat adult, pediatric and elderly patients for emergency and outpatient imaging needs. Our team of 14 board certified radiologists are highly trained and focus on multiple subspecialties to treat the entire body. Utilizing state-of-the-art technology and advanced image-guided techniques, our imaging services include abdominal, cardiac and thoracic, musculoskeletal, neuroradiology, ultrasound, molecular imaging and emergency imaging. Our cutting-edge technology includes the latest MRI, CT, nuclear medicine scans and ultrasound equipment.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging (sonography) is the use of high frequency sound waves to create an accurate image of the inside of the body. Medical usage of ultrasound has been around for over 60 years. Utilizing sound waves instead of ionizing radiation makes it is a valuable tool for physicians in helping to diagnose and treat their patients. The Carilion ultrasound department serves our inpatients and emergency room patients at six hospitals with three convenient outpatient locations

The ultrasound department is accredited by the American College of Radiology in General, Gynecological and Obstetrical ultrasound. We proudly boast experts in ultrasound imaging who are certified by the American Board of Radiology. Our staff use the most advanced techniques and technologies in diagnostic imaging. Our cutting-edge equipment consists of 11 real-time scanners, all with Doppler and color-flow Doppler capability. All our machines have 3D capability and three have elastography capability.

Abdominal Imaging

Our division proudly offers all the advanced abdominal imaging capabilities expected of a major referral and research institution. The Division is staffed by expert radiologists with fellowship training from top-tier institutions. Utilizing state of the art equipment, including multiple 1.5 and 3T MRI magnets, 64 slice Dual Energy CT, and 3-D and shear wave ultrasound, we have the capability to tailor examinations directly to the needs of our patients.

Much more than simply offering expert interpretations, we participate in a multi-disciplinary approach to care, integrating our advanced capabilities with numerous specialized clinical divisions. We support clinical staff through specialized protocolling, specialized interpretations, and direct consultation. These services include interventional gastroenterology and hepatology, general and surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, an advanced aortic center, gynecological oncology, urogynecology, and urology.

For our oncology patients, our radiologists participate in multiple subspecialty muti-disciplinary tumor conferences, offering integrated imaging analysis to the care of oncology patients. This includes Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary, Liver Tumor, Lung, Gynecologic, Skin and Soft Tissue oncology conferences. We also support cancer research and clinical trials through RECIST.

Musculoskeletal

The Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology is a group of dedicated MSK radiologists who specialize in all aspects of musculoskeletal disorders. Disease expertise includes trauma, arthritis, orthopedic oncology, joint replacements and sports medicine. The division provides a full range of diagnostic examinations for Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, Institute of Orthopedics and Neurosciences, Crystal Spring Imaging Center and its satellite centers, including inpatient and outpatient MSK radiography, CT, MRI, and arthrography.

Our musculoskeletal radiologists are experts in musculoskeletal imaging with an active consultation service and close working relationships with the clinical services including rheumatology, orthopedic oncology, sports medicine, pediatric orthopedic surgery, trauma and infectious disease.

Neuroradiology

The Neuroradiology Division utilizes advanced and innovative MRI and CT techniques to provide our community and region with compassionate, complete, and precise imaging of the brain, skull base, spine and neck. Our subspecialty certified neuroradiologists are committed to facilitating, expediting, and guiding advanced care while applying the latest technology and imaging practices. In conjunction with Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) School of Medicine, our physicians are faculty members supporting scholarly research and medical education.

Our team of neuroradiologists works collaboratively with specialists and subspecialists in many diverse fields including oncology, radiation oncology, neurosurgery, neurology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, emergency medicine, trauma surgery, infectious disease, internal medicine, family medicine, geriatrics, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, endocrinology, genetics, and pathology to deliver the highest available imaging expertise throughout these complex regions.

The division provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient diagnostic examinations for Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, Institute of Orthopedics and Neurosciences, Crystal Spring Imaging Center and its satellite centers.

Chest and Thoracic

Our group of board-certified radiologists provide interpretation of chest imaging across the Carilion network. We serve the imaging needs of our entire population, from newborns to adults of all ages.

In addition to standard chest X-rays and CT scans of the chest, we offer a variety of specialized diagnostic procedures, including high-resolution CT for interstitial lung disease, lung cancer screening CT, pre-procedure planning CT for aortic and mitral valve procedures, CT angiography, coronary CTA and cardiac MRI.

Pediatric

Our board certified radiologists are experts in the diagnosis of various disease processes, illnesses and injuries in newborn infants, children and adolescents. We offer advanced imaging modalities while minimizing low dose radiation to the pediatric population while producing the highest quality diagnostic images. We provide a safe and friendly atmosphere for children to receive comprehensive diagnostic imaging services including xray, ultrasound, MRI, CT, nuclear imaging and fluoroscopy.

Molecular Imaging

Molecular imaging includes nuclear medicine and PET. Both modalities involve the administration of a radioactive material usually by vein so that images can be obtained using special cameras. With molecular imaging, there are particular advantages over other modalities such as MRI and CT. These types of studies allow the radiologist to image particular organ systems and function of these organs and allows us different means to image cancer.

In addition to the imaging procedures, we offer several treatments that involve oral or intravenous administration of radioactive materials that can treat or control various types of cancer. This is part of a new strategy called theranostics or precision medicine where if a cancer has certain targets (receptors) that can be imaged with a particular tracer, the imaging agent can be modified to deliver a special radioactive material that can treat the cancer and limit the amount of damage that occurs to other organs as can happen with many types of chemotherapy.

Virginia Tech Carilion Partnership

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) formed out of an innovative public-private partnership with Virginia Tech. Together, we are working to transform health care by educating the physician leaders of tomorrow. VTCSOM uses a patient-centered curriculum designed to develop physicians who can take research from the lab to the patient’s bedside. Students learn, train and work side by side with Carilion’s highly experienced medical staff.

Education

Overview

The Radiology department partners with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine to offer medical students the ability to rotate through the diagnostic radiology department's various subspecialties. Medical student have the opportunity to see live cases and learn what it is like to function as a radiologist. We also offer a comprehensive educational experience for residents training in other specialties.
