About

Program Overview

With a nationally accredited Chest Pain Center and Heart Alert™ program, our heart care teams diagnose and develop specific treatment plans. Our growing facilities and new technology help us care for more people with serious heart conditions.

Carilion Cardiovascular Institute offers advanced care throughout western Virginia—so patients don’t need to travel far. Our teams are prepared to treat both common heart issues and emergencies like heart attacks and cardiac arrest. Learn more about our Heart and Vascular Care.

Our Technology

Our cardiology program is a regional leader in both experience and innovation. We were the first in the area to offer open-heart surgery and now perform more than 5,000 minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures each year. Our cardiac catheterization labs are the largest in the region, equipped to support complex diagnostic and interventional cases. We utilize advanced imaging, structural heart interventions (including TAVR and MitraClip), and hybrid OR capabilities.

Research

Our cardiology research spans the spectrum from large, multi-center randomized clinical trials to smaller studies conceived and conducted by Carilion cardiologists. Our studies are sponsored by the NIH, by device and pharmaceutical companies, by agencies such the American Heart Association and by foundations.
