Department of Anesthesiology

The Department of Anesthesiology brings together board-certified anesthesiologists and CRNAs who provide high-quality perioperative care while educating learners—from visiting residents to medical students in surgery, emergency medicine, internal medicine, dentistry, and more.

About

Program Overview

Anesthesia Consultants of Virginia (ACV), Anesthesia Associates of Radford (AAR), and their predecessor groups have provided clinical leadership in anesthesiology since the earliest days of operations at Carilion.

Today, the department includes a collaborative team of private practice physicians and CRNAs alongside Carilion-employed anesthesiologists and CRNAs. All clinicians are board certified or board eligible, with many holding subspecialty fellowship training, ensuring comprehensive, high-quality perioperative care across service lines.

Faculty

The anesthesiology team currently includes 40 full-time faculty members, with plans to recruit an additional 5 over the next 3 – 5 years, bringing the total to 45 faculty.

Anesthesiology Partnerships

Virginia Tech Carilion Partnership

For decades, our faculty have trained learners in the art and science of anesthesia, including visiting anesthesia residents, VTCSOM students, Carilion surgery, emergency medicine, and internal medicine residents, dental residents, and visiting medical students. Building on this long history of education, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine is establishing a new Department of Anesthesiology to serve as the formal academic home for the specialty. This department will provide dedicated administration and oversight of all anesthesiology-related academic programs, ensuring continued excellence in education, training, and scholarly activity.

Education

Overview

We're actively working to establish a residency program for physician anesthesiologists, with plans to develop post-residency fellowships in the future. The anesthesiology residency spans 4 years—a year of internship in a broad medical field, followed by 3 years focused on anesthesiology training.
