About

Program Overview

Anesthesiology has been a Section within the Carilion Clinic Department of Surgery since that was created in 2003. Anesthesia Consultants of Virginia (ACV), Anesthesia Associates of Radford (AAR), and their predecessors have been providing leadership in this field since operations first began at Carilion. The Department currently consists of private practice physicians and CRNAs, Carilion Clinic employed physicians, and Carilion Clinic employed CRNAs. Current staff are highly trained, 100% Board Certified / Board eligible, and many are subspecialty fellowship trained.

Faculty

The Department of Anesthesiology will initially have 40 full-time faculty members.  Anticipated recruitment within the next 3-5 years will include 5 new faculty positions for a total of 45 faculty.

Residencies

We are concurrently pursuing the creation of a residency for physician anesthesiologists and eventually, post residency fellowship programs. Anesthesiology residency requires 4 years. The internship can be completed under different fields of medicine, but the last 3 years are Anesthesiology specific.

Anesthesiology Partnerships

Virginia Tech Carilion Partnership

Virginia Tech proposes to create a new Department of Anesthesiology within the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. This new department would become the Anesthesiology department within the VTC School of Medicine.  Our department has been educating learners in the art and science of Anesthesia for decades. Learners have ranged from visiting Anesthesia Residents, VTCSOM students, Carilion Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine residents, Dental Residents, and visiting medical students. It is the desire of the medical school to create a new academic Department of Anesthesiology at the medical school. The purpose of the proposed organizational change is to establish this new academic department within the School and to be responsible for the administration and oversight of academic programs pertaining to Anesthesiology.

Mission, Goals and Strengths

Mission: To provide extraordinary physician-led perioperative care.

Goals: The creation of this new clinical Department of Anesthesiology at Carilion Clinic and will also coincide with the creation of a new Anesthesiology residency.  The creation of a Department of Anesthesiology is consistent with the current VTCSOM strategic plan, which states that we will continue to broaden and expand our partnership with both the Virginia Tech/Blacksburg campus and Carilion Clinic.  We pride ourselves in training expert clinicians who are independent and confident when they graduate from our program

Strengths: The new department is also synergistic with the current strategic plan of the university as reflected in the Beyond Boundaries framework.  The new department will be a major contributor to research and discovery, student success and the continued growth of the Perioperative Medicine, Anesthesiology Critical Care Medine, Pain Medicine, and Anesthesia sciences.
