We are committed to making sure that every woman has prompt and easy access to the medical resources she needs to screen for, diagnose, and treat breast cancer—including routine mammograms, accurate diagnostic imaging and special counseling and genetic testing for those at high risk for breast cancer.
We believe that an interdisciplinary approach is the key to modern breast care, so our team of skilled professionals includes medical and radiation oncologists, breast and plastic surgeons, pathologists, advanced practice nurses, nurse practitioners, breast imagers, and mammography and ultrasound technologists. Our team is dedicated to providing attentive care of the highest level to all our patients and their families.
The Carilion Clinic Breast Diagnostic Center, located in Roanoke, offers a patient-centered program, led by experienced staff, using advanced technology, including digital mammography techniques, including both 2D and 3D mammography.
Services
At the Breast Diagnostic Center, our diagnostic services include:
- Diagnostic Work Up
- Diagnostic Mammogram – A mammogram directed by the radiologist on site to clarify any potential areas of concern.
- Breast Ultrasound – A test that uses sound waves to examine the areas of concern in the breast.
- Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – This advanced technology allows for a highly sensitive examination of the breast for high risk screening and surgical planning.
- Percutaneous Breast Biopsy – This is a needle guided biopsy procedure performed under local anesthetic that removes breast tissue to examine it for signs of breast cancer or other disorders.
- Biopsy results – Most biopsy results are relayed to the patient by the radiologist within 48 hours of procedure.
- Weekly pre-treatment cancer planning conferences – Comprehensive review of patients diagnosed in our center are reviewed by an interdisciplinary team to determine the best course of treatment. The interdisciplinary team is comprised of: surgeons, radiologists, medical and radiation oncologists and other health care professionals involved in breast care. We aim to treat patients as individuals, not statistics.
- Benign correlation conferences – Benign biopsy findings are reviewed when appropriate by an interdisciplinary team that correlates pathology and imaging results.
- Weekly cancer treatment planning conferences – Every breast cancer diagnosis in our center is reviewed by an interdisciplinary team to determine the best course of treatment
- Nurse navigation – A dedicated advanced practice nurse provides individual support to women through diagnosis and treatment, serving as a care coordinator.
- Breast cancer support group – An advanced practice nurse facilitates a bi-monthly support group that is open to all women diagnosed with breast cancer.
- Every Woman’s Life – helps low income, uninsured women between the ages of 40-64 with breast and cervical cancer screenings. Women between the ages of 18-39 may also qualify for diagnostic testing.
