For patients who received a letter about improperly accessed health information
Carilion Clinic is committed to providing high quality care to our patients, including protecting their privacy. We are notifying the public of an incident involving patient information.
On January 11, 2019, we learned that some medical records may have been inappropriately viewed between January 2017 and October 2018. After an extensive investigation, we have determined that a member of our staff unnecessarily accessed medical information. Although the staff member was authorized to access our medical record system, we have determined that the individual did not have an approved reason to access the records.
What Information Was Involved?
The type of information involved in the incident may have included patient names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, and diagnosis and treatment information. The incident did not include any financial information, such as social security numbers, credit card or other payment information, or health insurance numbers or member IDs.
What We Are Doing?
The employee no longer has access to medical records. We have addressed the incident and taken action per our policies. We also have reviewed our procedures and implemented additional measures and safeguards to prevent this type of incident from occurring in the future.
What You Can Do?
As noted above, the incident did not involve any financial information. As such, we do not think that there is anything else that patients need to do at this time.
