Crystal Spring Tower Opens
The much-anticipated Crystal Spring Tower addition to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital opened after six years of construction. The 12-story, more-than-500,000-square-foot expansion doubled the size of our Emergency Department, adding five trauma bays—including the region’s first Level 1 pediatric trauma bay—and introduced an additional helipad for rapid access to care. The new hospital tower also expanded space for our renowned Cardiovascular Institute, bringing specialists together in a flexible, state-of-the-art environment built to evolve with advancing technology.

The much-anticipated Crystal Spring Tower addition to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital opened after six years of construction. The 12-story, more-than-500,000-square-foot expansion doubled the size of our Emergency Department, adding five trauma bays—including the region’s first Level 1 pediatric trauma bay—and introduced an additional helipad for rapid access to care. Campaign Exceeds Goal
Fund-raising shifts to proton therapy
Our Reaching Far, Caring Close campaign to build the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center launched publicly in July 2025 with $96 million toward our $100 million goal. We surpassed the goal just four months later, raising $105 million. A $17.5 million leadership gift from former U.S. Ambassador Nicholas F. Taubman and Eugenia L.Taubman now advances the next phase. Our new goal is to raise $50 million to add proton therapy and position Carilion as a destination for world-class cancer care in Central and Western Virginia.

Transplant Care Comes Home
New Kidney Transplant Program Announced
A new kidney transplant program at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital will relieve the travel burden and strengthen continuity of care for patients like Joey Shervey, who was diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney failure in his mid-20s. Our program will be the only one in the region and will address the need for kidney transplants, which is expected to grow 35% over the next five years.

We expanded access to midwifery services with new locations in Roanoke, Rocky Mount, and Christiansburg. In addition to maternity care, our Certified Nurse Midwives provide a full range of services for women at every life stage, from routine exams and reproductive health care to post-menopausal support, with no referral needed.

New Carilion Children’s practices in Rocky Mount and Lexington mean high-quality, comprehensive care is available closer to home for families there. With these additions, we now have 5 general pediatric sites across our region, with specialty care in 18 disciplines provided at Carilion Children's Tanglewood Center in Roanoke. The creation of our first endowed chair of pediatrics with funding from Children's Miracle Network (CMN) of Southwest Virginia further reinforces our commitment to our region's children.
