The Future of Care is Here

Crystal Spring Tower Opens

The much-anticipated Crystal Spring Tower addition to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital opened after six years of construction. The 12-story, more-than-500,000-square-foot expansion doubled the size of our Emergency Department, adding five trauma bays—including the region’s first Level 1 pediatric trauma bay—and introduced an additional helipad for rapid access to care. The new hospital tower also expanded space for our renowned Cardiovascular Institute, bringing specialists together in a flexible, state-of-the-art environment built to evolve with advancing technology.

Campaign Exceeds Goal

Fund-raising shifts to proton therapy

Our Reaching Far, Caring Close campaign to build the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center launched publicly in July 2025 with $96 million toward our $100 million goal. We surpassed the goal just four months later, raising $105 million. A $17.5 million leadership gift from former U.S. Ambassador Nicholas F. Taubman and Eugenia L.Taubman now advances the next phase. Our new goal is to raise $50 million to add proton therapy and position Carilion as a destination for world-class cancer care in Central and Western Virginia.

Transplant Care Comes Home

New Kidney Transplant Program Improves Care

Diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney failure in his mid-20s, Joey Shervey and his wife made hundreds of trips across the state for dialysis, evaluation, and transplant appointments. Twice-weekly travel to Charlottesville became part of their routine, placing financial, emotional, and logistical strain on their young family.

While Joey was fortunate to receive a living-donor transplant, the journey underscored the challenges faced by patients in our region with kidney disease who must travel two to four hours for care.

A new kidney transplant program at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital that received state approval last year will relieve the travel burden and strengthen continuity of care for the growing number of patients like Joey. When it opens in 2026, CRMH will be the only organ transplant center in the region and serve patients who need kidney transplants closer to home. The need for kidney transplants is expected to increase 35% over the next five years.

Women’s Care Expands

Midwifery services grow beyond New River Valley

We expanded midwifery services across our region, increasing access to personalized, comprehensive care for women at every stage of life. Previously concentrated in the New River Valley, these services are now available in multiple locations, including Roanoke, Rocky Mount, and Christiansburg—making it easier for patients to receive care close to home without a referral.

Certified Nurse Midwives play a vital role in delivering patient-centered care that emphasizes wellness, prevention, and shared decision-making. In addition to supporting maternity care, our midwifery teams provide a full range of services, from routine exams and reproductive health care to post-menopausal support. They also offer hospital-based births, ensuring patients have access to expert care and appropriate medical support throughout labor and delivery.

This expansion was made possible by the continued growth of our midwifery team, with additional providers joining to meet increasing demand. By strengthening this workforce, we are improving access to care while offering more choice in how and where patients receive services.
