Bunion

At Carilion's Institute for Orthopaedics and Neurosciences, our team will provide
expert care to alleviate pain from bunions and other foot deformities.

What is a Bunion?

Also known as hallux valgus

Problem: A bump on the side of the big toe.

Concern: Discomfort with daily activities.

Solution: Surgery may be necessary to ease the pain and correct the deformity by realigning the bones that make up the big toe.

This bump occurs when some of the bones move out of alignment in the front part of your foot. The big toe leans toward the smaller toes, forcing the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out rather than point straight ahead.

MICA bunion procedure

Minimally Invasive Surgery

MICA: Tiny incisions used to cut and realign the bones.

Technique: Minimal disruption to soft tissue.

Solution: This minimally invasive approach results in less pain and swelling after surgery and patients can return to normal activity quickly.

Once the bone is realigned, it's held in the correct position using specially designed screws which sit flush and cannot be felt by the patient. Since there is less disruption to the soft tissue, patients can walk immediately.

Lapiplasty 3-D correction

Fixing the root cause

Lapiplasty: Provides 3D fix for unstable joint.

Technique: Corrects alignment and secures the foundation.

Solution: Procedure addresses all three dimensions through advanced fixation technology, restoring your big toe joint to its normal anatomy.

The metatarsal bone is repositioned: vertically, horizontally and rotationally and the affected bones are fully restored to their proper alignment. Titanium plates are fused with the joint to secure the foundation.
