Carilion Clinic Patient Transportation operates the region's premier emergency ground transport system, covering all of Virginia and West Virginia, with bases in Roanoke, Lexington, Westlake, Franklin, Giles, and Radford. We also accept transports to and from other states.

Our fleet of 40 advanced life-support ambulances and staff of 230 employees, that also includes a bike EMS team, are ready to respond to any emergency 24 hours a day.

We also have specialized transportation that is designed to transport infants and children—even premature newborns—by ground or air to serve our smallest emergency patients. It is custom-outfitted with the most advanced life-saving medical equipment available, carries two self-contained incubator units and is large enough for two care teams.

The Chest Pain Center at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is nationally accredited by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, which means we provide an advanced "plan of action" for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients experiencing chest pain. Our doctors, nurses and technicians have trained extensively in working as a team for quick evaluation and treatment. Patients are immediately assessed and given the treatment they need. Heart attack patients are fast-tracked to life-saving care through the Heart Alert program offered throughout our western Virginia service area.

The area’s only medical/surgical oncology unit that is dedicated to the treatment of adults is located at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The unit has 22 private rooms and highly trained nurses with expertise in chemotherapy and biotherapy administration and care for the oncology patient. Evidence-based nursing care is provided to medical and surgical patients with complex needs. We have the ability to treat all kinds of blood disorders and cancers; patients needing acute leukemia induction therapies can stay close to home for their treatment needs. Patients are also treated for related complications and side effects of treatment such as neutropenic fever, anemia, wound care and symptom and pain management. Ancillary support services include dietitians, therapists, social services, case management, pharmacy and chaplain services.

Interventional radiology (IR) offers minimally invasive procedures that can treat a wide variety of conditions in the body. Our doctors are highly specialized in radiology medicine and can often offer an alternative to traditional open surgery. IR procedures use image guidance (ultrasound, CT scan or fluoroscopy) that point the physician directly to the area of interest and allow for precise treatment. Most of our procedures can be done without general anesthesia and patients can go home the same day. IR physicians work closely with primary care and other specialty providers to ensure that each patient receives individualized care. Our treatments can be used for cancer, infertility, liver, renal and vascular disease and for pain management.

Certified as the region’s only Level 1 trauma center since 1983, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is prepared to treat the most critical types of injuries. And with more than a 15,000-square-mile coverage area that includes two major interstates and thousands of acres of national forest, it’s a lot.

We see patients who have received an injury that must be treated in a very narrow window of time in order for the patient to survive. Whether it’s a mountain biking or river accident, or injuries sustained in a multi-car crash, our interdisciplinary team of full time trauma surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, nurses, specialists, therapists and technicians is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide immediate care.

Every second counts after an accident or other medical emergency. Our Life-Guard team takes to the air to get expert medical care to patients who need it immediately if we can't get there by ambulance.

In 1981, Carilion Clinic Life-Guard became Virginia's first air ambulance service. Currently operated by Med-Trans Corporation, Life-Guard provides 24-hour transport for the entire state of Virginia, as well as parts of West Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Our specialized fleet of helicopters operates out of three bases throughout the state, providing fast emergency access to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center.

Our Life-Guard flight team is staffed by nationally registered paramedics, registered nurses, and FAA-trained pilots, all of whom have received specialized training and certifications in air medical transport. Air medical operations are provided by Med-Trans Corporation.

The Palliative care unit is located at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and provides care to seriously ill patients with the goal of improving pain and managing symptoms while assisting the patient and family with establishing goals of care. The palliative care team consists of nurses, advanced practice nurses (C.N.S., N.P.), bereavement counselors, fellows, residents and physicians. This team is supported by chaplaincy, dietary, social work, case management and pharmacy services. They all participate together in daily rounds to each patient's room. Common diagnoses for those in the palliative care unit include advanced cancer, cardiac, pulmonary, renal, liver and neurological conditions/diseases. 

Unexpected emergencies with children can be incredibly frightening. Whether your active little one had an accident, such as a bike fall, or dangerous health issue, our emergency specialists are here to make sure that each one of our young patients – and their anxious parents – gets the best care available as quickly as possible.

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital has the region's first emergency department devoted specifically to children that are treated by our compassionate staff of pediatric physicians and nurses, specially trained to understand and meet the unique physical and emotional needs of children.

Depending on each child's specific situation, we offer dedicated services such as a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and the third largest neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the state of Virginia.

A Safe Haven Baby Box is a legal way to anonymously surrender an infant in the state of Virginia. It provides a safe environment for relinquishing a baby up to 30 days after birth. Hospital staff are trained in its operation and the response process for when a baby is surrendered.
