No patient wants to be in the hospital, but if they have to be, their level of satisfaction is largely dependent on the quality of their experience. At Carilion Clinic, we understand that the best healing is often done at home. But if a situation requires a hospital stay, it is our goal to make patients and their families as comfortable as possible. That's why we consider the patient experience to be another factor in the quality of care at Carilion facilities.

In fact, in June 2011, Professional Research Consultants, an independent research firm, awarded three Carilion Clinic hospitals with Quality of Care awards:

  • Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital: five stars, inpatient cardiac/telemetry services
  • Carilion New River Valley Medical Center: five stars, inpatient OB/GYN services
  • Carilion Giles Community Hospital: four stars, emergency department services

PRC awards are solely based on patient satisfaction surveys. For example, to receive a 5-star Excellence Award, units had to achieve 90th percentile or higher in patient satisfaction for an entire calendar year. Receiving such awards based on patient experience in three separate communities demonstrates quality of care not just in Roanoke, but across the Carilion footprint.

MyChart Improves Patient Communication

Imagine being able to sit in bed and request an appointment with your physician and renew a prescription. Such ease in healthcare is possible at Carilion Clinic.

Carilion is the first provider in southwest Virginia to provide MyChart, an online health management tool. Not only does the system allow you to track your medical records and test results, it also provides a messaging system directly to your physicians. You can even have proxy access to track the health records of both your parents and your children. (Only if certain legal requirements are met.)
