Sleep Medicine

Sleep is normally a restful time that allows your body to recover and prepare for the next day. If sleep is interrupted, you may feel tired, become irritable, and lose concentration during the day.

All of us have trouble sleeping occasionally, but if you are having regular problems or difficulty staying asleep, you may need our help.

Carilion Clinic's network of sleep centers, the largest in our western Virginia region, is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Our team of board certified sleep specialists has been specially trained to evaluate, diagnose, and manage sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, snoring, restless leg syndrome, excessive sleepiness, and others in both adults and children (one year and older). Some of these sleep disorders are not only annoying and fatiguing, they may carry a real risk to your health. Fortunately, Carilion can help.

We can identify the cause of your sleep disorder and help you get better, more refreshing sleep. Overnight monitored polysomnography (sleep studies) and sleep latency tests (nap studies) are available at our state-of-the-art sleep centers. In some cases, we also perform home-based sleep studies.

If a sleep disorder is diagnosed, we'll work with your doctor to decide the most appropriate treatment. Our sleep specialists provide comprehensive care for all sleep medicine issues, coordinating care with all necessary specialty physicians, including otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), neurology, cardiology, psychology, dentistry, and bariatric surgery.

Services include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of snoring and sleep apnea
  • Diagnosis and management of insomnia
  • Diagnosis and management of Restless Legs
  • Diagnosis and treatment of hypersomnolence, such as narcolepsy
  • Performance of sleep studies (home based and in-laboratory), including MSLTs (nap studies) and use of full EEG montage for seizure evaluation, when clinically indicated

Carilion has sleep centers in several locations around western Virginia, including Roanoke, New River Valley, West Lake and Lexington, so you can find one that's convenient for you.
