Psychiatry & Behavioral Medicine

Message from the Program Director

This is an exciting time to join us! The opportunities are abundant to learn and grow in your profession.

The strength of our program is its diversity; from a private practice setting at Carilion Clinic, the region's leading health care provider focusing on patient-centered care; to the Salem Veteran's Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), a tertiary referral mental health center well known for extraordinary care in substance abuse as well as post traumatic stress disorder; to the community mental health system at Blue Ridge Behavioral Health; or the opportunities afforded at Catawba Hospital, a unique state hospital. These various teaching sites complement each other in many ways and provide high quality training. Residents have exposure to patients with different demographic profiles and severity/types of illness.

We believe that the best way of approaching patients is to use the biopsychosocialspiritual model—integrating advances in neuroscience with psychodynamic approaches and understanding of the patient's social environment. The emphasis is on eclectic or balanced training, rather than limited to a more biologic or more psychodynamic program.

We look forward to hearing from you and showing you all that we have to offer!
