Welcome to the Virginia Tech Carilion Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program. Our mission is to train excellent clinicians who skillfully meet the psychiatric needs of children and families in our region and beyond, by providing care, innovating in research, and guiding best practices.
The training program facilitates the mastery of a broad range of skills which child psychiatrists require to practice with excellence. We teach an awareness of multiple influences on development, and the capacity to view clinical problems from multiple perspectives simultaneously.
The Fellow learns to view child psychopathology through the lenses of developmental, family, systems, and biological theories. Fellows learn to use testing when appropriate, to facilitate diagnosis and also to monitor treatment progress.
The Fellow also learns to blend individual observations with those of a multi-disciplinary team, both at the level of assessment and during longer term care. Working collaboratively with other professionals in the service of children and families is a focus of the program.
Our program has a strong teaching focus in child psychotherapy and play therapy, family therapies, and cognitive behavioral therapy for children are taught with the guidance of experienced supervisors.
Our program also encourages individual interests. Research, teaching, and special projects are encouraged. Faculty seek to guide and inspire the Fellow in the process of applying knowledge to clinical practice and maintaining a spirit of life long learning.
