Dr. Nicholson was a biochemistry major at Florida State University. He went on to Georgetown Medical School and was inducted into the AOA National Medical Honor Society. He enrolled in a radiology residency program at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. During this time, he also trained at Children's Hospital of Atlanta and Grady Memorial Hospital. Dr. Nicholson then went on to train at the world-renowned 3-year neurointerventional radiology fellowship at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) run by Drs. Randy Higashida, Van Halbach, and Chris Dowd. During this time, he started the now very active interventional MRI program, which primarily treats cutaneous vascular lesions in conjunction with the UCSF Birthmarks and Vascular Anomalies Clinic. He also served as a clinical instructor - teaching residents and fellows at UCSF, as well as performing cases at the San Francisco Veterans Administration hospital, San Francisco General Hospital, and the Benioff UCSF Childrens Hospital. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Nicholson came to Carilion. Here he has been very active in performing neurointerventional procedures and helping to build a first-rate Surgical and Endovascular Cerebrovascular Care Team. This team is bringing state of the art stroke care to the region as well as treatments for a wide array of vascular and neoplastic diseases of the head, spine and brain. He is active in national neurointerventional surgery organizations and is collaborating with researchers from VTCRI and Virginia Tech College of Neurosciences in various lines of research to help advance care of neurological diseases. Dr. Nicholson is experienced in the endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformaitons (AVMs), dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF), carotid stenosis, various brain and spinal cord tumors, intracranial atherosclerosis, epistaxis (nose bleeds), spinal vascular lesions - as well as innovative treatments for conditions such as cutaneous vascular malformations and pediatric retinoblastoma (a type of cancer arising in the eye).
