You may be surprised to learn that nearly 10% of all newborns spend some time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). If your child is one of them, it’s reassuring to know that Carilion Clinic has specialized technology and expertise in caring for premature and sick babies.
We care for about 600 babies each year in our 60–bed unit, which is the 3rd largest in Virginia. The NICU care team is led by neonatologists, who are doctors with special training in caring for the youngest babies. Our staff is experienced, highly skilled and committed to giving the very best care to get your baby well enough to go home with you.
We are committed to family–centered care. We want you to be part of our team and participate in the decisions that need to be made regarding your baby.
Some babies are in the NICU for just a few hours while others remain for weeks. Parents may visit their babies in the NICU at any time, 24 hours day. We may sometimes ask you to step out for sterile procedures or other situations but will always return you to your baby’s bedside as quickly as possible. We have other rules regarding visitors and holding and feeding your baby; your nurse will inform you about what these are and answer any questions you may have. Please know that our rules are designed to give every baby the care he or she needs to thrive and it is always our goal to get your baby well and home as soon as possible.
