The Children’s Oncology Group is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research.
Carilion Clinic Children's Hospital childhood cancer program conducts clinical research trials through its association with the Children's Oncology Group (COG). We see approximately 15-20 new oncology patients a year. Having the only 3 board certified pediatric hematologist/oncologists in Southwestern Virginia and Southeastern West Virginia, we offer cutting-edge cancer treatment to pediatric patients and their families.
The Children's Oncology Group, a National Cancer Institute supported clinical trials group, is the world's largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. It is comprised of more than 7,500 experts in pediatric cancer at more than 200 leading children's hospitals, universities and cancer centers across North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.
Today more than 90% of 13,500 children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer each year in the U.S. are cared for at COG member institutions. Research performed by COG has turned children's cancer from a virtually incurable disease 50 years ago to one with a combined 5-year survival rate of 80% today. Carilion Clinic Children's Hospital is an active member of the Children's Oncology Group.
