The focus of the Carilion Clinic-Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Pediatric Residency program is to produce competent general pediatricians who will be ready for general practice or fellowship training. There are six residents per year, which allows for individual attention to each resident's educational needs and professional goals. Our program benefits from the deep investment of the faculty and administration at Carilion Clinic. Our first class of residents began in 2012 and are accredited through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
About the Children’s Hospital
Carilion Children’s Hospital is a hospital-within-a-hospital located at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The Children’s Hospital serves as the primary referral destination for Southwest Virginia and parts of southern and eastern West Virginia. Nestled in the Roanoke Valley, with beautiful mountain views, the Children’s Hospital includes a dedicated pediatric ward, intensive care units for neonates and children, and pediatric emergency department. Pediatric primary care and 19 subspecialty care clinics and a wide range of ancillary support round out the services provided by our facility.
About our community
There are approximately one million people in the catchment area for Carilion Clinic. Pediatric residents in our program provide care for children from urban, suburban, and rural areas, as well as refugees. Carilion Clinic is a not-for-profit institution and we believe strongly in serving our community.
About the learning environment
Our program provides a friendly and supportive learning environment for our residents. The Children’s Hospital is the major pediatric training site for allopathic medical students from the Virginia Tech-Carilion School of Medicine. The Children’s Hospital is also a training site for osteopathic medical students and physician assistant students. Our pediatric residents have a special opportunity to learn through teaching. No pediatric fellowships are offered at the Children’s Hospital, which ensures direct interaction and teaching between faculty, residents, and students. The nearby campus of the Virginia Tech-Carilion Research Institute is associated with the Carilion Clinic Department of Pediatrics.
