Carilion Clinic ensures that the patients have the highest quality interpreters through requiring certification, credentials, and business associate agreements. Interpreters and Auxiliary Aids

At Carilion Clinc we provide professional medical Interpreters to patients who are limited English proficient or who are deaf. Language services are available 24/7 to all patients and families for appointments, procedures, and hospital stays. There is no cost to patients for interpretations at the hospital or any of our Carilion Clinic facilities. The hospital will provide appropriate auxiliary aids free of charge, including: written materials, language line services, in-person interpreters, and video remote interpreting.  Please contact your provider if you need language services during your visit or stay.

How do I get an interpreter?

  • When scheduling a hospital appointment or service, if not asked, please let us know that you need an interpreter.
  • When you come to the hospital, tell a hospital staff member if you need an interpreter.
  • Carilion employs interpreters who speak Spanish and Nepali.  We also have a sign language interpreter on staff. 
  • Carilion has contracts with several other professional interpreting companies to be able to provide in-person interpreting when needed. 
  • We also use a professional “Language Line” service that provides interpretation for more than 200 language dialects by telephone.

Hearing Impaired

If you have hearing or speech challenges and require the use of a Text Telephone (TTY/TDD) and/or Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS), please connect with a TRS operator by dialing 711.

  • Carilion employs a sign language interpreter and has contracts with several other professional interpreting services for in-person interpreting when needed. 
  • Video remote interpreting is available at all Carilion hospitals and some outpatient clinics for immediate communication with patients who are deaf.
