Every second counts after an accident or other medical emergency. Our Life-Guard team takes to the air to get expert medical care to patients who need it immediately if we can't get there in an ambulance.
As Virginia's first air ambulatory service, Carilion Clinic Life-Guard provides 24-hour transport for the entire state of Virginia, as well as parts of West Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Our specialized fleet of helicopters operates out of three bases throughout the state, providing fast emergency access to western Virginia's regional Level I Trauma Center at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Everyone who is airlifted to Carilion has the best expertise and technology even in transit. Each of our helicopters is outfitted with the most advanced life support systems available, so our on-board professionals can begin taking stabilization and treatment on the way to the hospital. Air medical operations are provided by Med-Trans Corporation.
YOUR FLIGHT CREW
Our Life-Guard flight team is staffed by nationally registered paramedics, registered nurses, and FAA-trained pilots, all of whom have received specialized training and certifications in air medical transport. In addition to emergency medicine, our crew members complete extensive studies in flight physiology, aircraft safety, survival skills, and critical care unit rotations.
Since we first began air operations in 1981, we have expanded from one small helicopter to three top-of-the-line choppers, each outfitted with the best in life saving technology. We've grown especially fast over the last decade, opening our second air medical base in 2005 at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Radford, and our third in spring 2012 at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Our original base was relocated to Westlake in 2012 as well.
With our technologically advanced equipment and medical helicopters in strategic locations, we can respond quickly within the New River Valley region, as well as the counties of Pittsylvania, Henry, Danville, Martinsville, Rockbridge, Alleghany, Bath, and Greenbriar, West Virginia. Throughout our history we've strived to bring top-notch immediate response capabilities to even the most distant parts of our community. Our highly trained specialists continually pursue the highest levels of expertise and accreditation possible to make sure that we continue to offer the best on-site and in-flight care for our patients. Since our inception, Carilion's Life-Guard choppers have safely transported thousands of critically ill and injured children and adults to the medical care they need.
