Some people with disease or chronic illness suffer from great pain or discomfort, either from the disease itself or its treatment. There is no reason to suffer needlessly. At Carilion Clinic, we offer palliative care to improve the quality of life for anyone suffering from advanced or disabling illness.
Palliative care is a medical specialty that focuses on relieving or avoiding suffering, not curing or treating the underlying disease. Therefore palliative care is often part of a patient's comprehensive treatment plan and can be helpful in all stages of illness, including for people who are undergoing treatment for a curable disease and those who are suffering from a chronic or progressive illness. Our goal is to reduce your discomfort of other patients so you can focus on your recovery and your family, not on your pain.
The interdisciplinary palliative care team includes the referring physician, palliative medicine specialists, nursing staff, pharmacists, respiratory, speech, occupational, and physical therapists, dieticians, chaplains, social workers, and trained volunteers. All are devoted to addressing the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social concerns of our patients.
Palliative care is usually covered by Medicare or private insurance; however, we offer services regardless of ability to pay. A referral from your managing physician is usually required for insurance coverage
We offer intensive, round-the-clock palliative care for hospitalized patients in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. We also assess and manage the pain and discomfort of patients at other facilities, upon the request of their managing physician. Ask the hospitalist or physician in charge of your family member's care to contact us.
