iTHRIV surveryFrequently Asked Questions

Understanding the Barriers and Facilitators to Community Participation and Engagement in Health Research

Why are you doing this study?

We are two Inova nurse researchers who have worked for years to improve health equity for all. We are also members of the “integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia” (iTHRIV). As part of our efforts to address health equity in Virginia, we want to better understand health researchers’ and community members’ perceptions about factors that might encourage or discourage community participation in health research.

How long will this take?

The study involves taking an anonymous survey, which means there are no personal identifiers to link the answers you give on the survey. This survey is estimated to take 5-10 minutes to complete.

Why are you asking me to complete this survey?

We value your voice, and we want to hear what you think. In the past, the thoughts and concerns of people in the community haven’t always been included in research. We know that in order to improve health for all Virginians it will take all of us to be engaged. We believe an important first step is to listen to you by getting your input on this survey.

What are you going to do with my survey answers?

We are two nurse researchers who want to hear from fellow Virginians so we can help increase community involvement in health research. When you share your life experience with this team, we listen, and will use this information to help community members and other researchers better understand what we can do to improve community engagement in health research. We plan to share the survey findings with the communities we serve and to post the findings on the iTHRIV website.

I have more questions.

We would like to hear from you! If you have any questions regarding this research study, please contact the Principal Investigator, Anne-Marie O’Brien at 703- 205-2250 or annemarie.obrien@inova.org; or Co-Investigator: Elyssa Wood at 703 858-6731 or Elyssa.wood @inova.org.

Can I share this survey with other people?

Yes! We encourage you to share the study flyer and survey link/QR code with your adult friends, family, and community members who live or work in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
