Carilion Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine rebrands to Carilion Mental Health

Summary

This change reflects the growing mental health care needs in the region and Carilion's hope to normalize mental health services.

As Carilion continues to assess, refresh and de-stigmatize mental health offerings, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine is undergoing a name change. Effective immediately, the department is now called Carilion Mental Health.

Carilion Mental Health encapsulates the breadth of services offered, including:

  • Inpatient care
  • Addiction services
  • Child and adolescent psychiatry
  • Geriatric psychiatry and the Center for Healthy Aging
  • Women’s mental health services
  • Interventional treatments
  • Research and development
  • Psychology services
  • Emergency psychiatry
  • Center for Grief and Healing

This name change builds on the momentum of moving outpatient mental health services to Tanglewood Mall.

“Our work to relocate and rename psychiatry and behavioral health services is more than a simple department rebrand,” said Bill Wasserman, vice president of Carilion Mental Health. “It reflects the growing mental health care needs in the region and our hope to standardize and normalize this important service.”

Last fall, Carilion announced most outpatient mental health services, currently located at 2017 S. Jefferson St., will relocate to space adjacent to Carilion’s existing Tanglewood practices. This location will provide access to clinics specializing in mental health and expanded office space. Carilion’s mental health services will occupy 37,000 square feet, spanning two floors and including group therapy rooms, support groups, clinician offices and telemedicine capabilities.

Inpatient and outpatient services continue at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in the location formerly known as Saint Albans Hospital. Outpatient services remain at the South Jefferson Street location, and plans for inpatient care are in development. By fall 2023, most Roanoke-based outpatient services will move to Tanglewood. Telepsychiatry services also continue throughout the region, including at our community hospitals.
