American Society for Health Care Engineering Recognizes Carilion Sustainability Efforts

Four Carilion Clinic hospitals received six awards from the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) for improvements in sustainability, including the Energy to Care Sustainability Champion Award.

ASHE is a professional membership group of the American Hospital Association with the goal of creating safe and efficient health care environments.

The Energy to Care Sustainability Champion Award recognizes facilities with a strong commitment to lowering energy use and meeting sustainability goals. Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital made up two of the three recipients for this year.

To win this award, facilities had to:

  • Track energy, water and greenhouse gas emissions in the Energy to Care dashboard
  • Have an ENERGY STAR score of 75 or above
  • Be an ENERGY STAR certified hospital
  • Have a published Sustainability statement, a designated Sustainability champion on staff and a designated Green Team

Additionally, four Carilion facilities received the 2022 Sustained Performance Award:

  • Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital
  • Carilion New River Valley Medical Center
  • Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital
  • Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital

“Sustainability is all about collaboration. We have so many employees and volunteers who are actively working towards these goals,” said Sara Wohlford, MPH, RN, Director of Sustainability. “Our Engineering and Maintenance staff are always looking for ways to improve our buildings.”

These awards showcase expansions in Carilion’s already diverse sustainability efforts. Many projects have been years in the making. From LED lighting to food waste reduction, these improvements can be seen in almost every department.

Each action to care for the environment also improves the health of the greater community, supporting Carilion’s mission.

“This recognition serves as a catalyst and motivation for even more change,” said Wohlford. "It’s so exciting to see our work pay off. But we aren’t stopping there.”
