At Carilion Clinic, our nurses are trained as labor coaches, certified in electronic fetal monitoring and have experience in both low- and high-risk obstetrical care. Our labor and delivery rooms are comfortable and spacious. Of course, most women also prefer to have their spouse or other support person stay with them throughout labor and delivery, and you may want to allow other family members or friends to periodically visit. Let us know your preferences, and we will make every effort to accommodate them.
When it comes time to give birth, our highly skilled OB/GYN department is equipped with the latest technology and facilities, including 24-hour anesthesia support, to manage both high-risk and normal deliveries. Our board-certified obstetricians are assisted by a highly skilled team of registered nurses, nurse practitioners and technicians. Certified perinatologists who specialize in maternal fetal medicine are available to help manage high-risk pregnancies, and our board-certified neonatologists are ready 24 hours a day to care for premature or sick newborns.
All of our labor and delivery rooms are fully equipped with the most up-to-date obstetrical and fetal monitoring technology, along with equipment for stabilizing your new baby's vital signs during those important minutes after delivery. Should the need arise, we also have operating suites for Cesarean deliveries and a neonatal intensive care unit.
BONDING WITH YOUR NEW BABY
In our Mother/Baby Unit, babies remain in the same room with new moms to nurture physical and emotional well-being. In the first hour after birth, most infants experience an alert state. We encourage new mothers to take advantage of this time (which will quickly be followed by deep sleep) to begin breastfeeding and bonding.
Your nurse will check on you and your baby frequently during this special bonding period, and will also make sure he or she stays warm enough. One of the best ways to keep your new baby warm is with skin-to-skin contact, which you can do whether you breastfeed or bottle-feed.
