At Carilion Cancer Center, we focus our experience and expertise on preventing, screening for, diagnosing and treating lung cancer in ways that give our patients the best possible prognosis.
Our cancer treatment program, in collaboration with the physicians of Blue Ridge Cancer Care, provides the full range of treatments for lung cancer, including:
We use advanced screening and diagnostic techniques to find and treat lung cancer, including computed tomography (CT), low-dose CT lung cancer screening, PET, bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, CT guided biopsy and mediastinoscopy.
Our specially trained interventional pulmonologists use sophisticated technology to diagnose and treat patients with lung cancer. Carilion offers diagnostic techniques such as bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, navigational bronchoscopy, tracheal and bronchial stenting, laser therapy and cryotherapy. Many of the innovative therapies we provide are unavailable elsewhere in our region.
In conjunction with Blue Ridge Cancer Care, we offer novel medical therapies including the latest clinical trials, chemotherapy, immunotherapies and targeted treatments.
We use MRI and CT imaging technology and CyberKnife® Radiosurgery that pinpoints the precise location of the tumor and targets it with beams of high-energy X-rays, destroying the cancer cells.
Our cardiothoracic surgeons perform endoscopic exams of the airway and lungs and specialize in minimally invasive surgery and standard surgical procedures such as mediastinoscopy used to diagnose and stage lung cancer.
Our thoracic oncology coordinator works with patients and their physician to facilitate the workup and management of cancer care while providing personalized support and patient education throughout diagnosis and treatment.
We emphasize a multidisciplinary approach to care so every patient benefits from the collaborative expertise of an experienced team of specialists who meet regularly to discuss each patient's care and progress. Specialists include those in:
- Thoracic surgery
- Pulmonary medicine
- Medical oncology
- Radiation oncology
