TRAINING INFECTIOUS DISEASE SPECIALISTS
The Virginia Tech Carilion Infectious Diseases Fellowship provides an educational program to train physicians who are very competent in Infectious Diseases. The clinical experiences include opportunities to observe and manage both younger and geriatric adult patients, but also some pediatric patients, who have a wide variety of Infectious Diseases problems.
Additionally, training in the areas of infection control, antibiotic stewardship, travel medicine and clinical microbiology will be incorporated into the program. This will involve both inpatient and ambulatory patient consultations and continuity patient encounters.
A longitudinal ambulatory experience will allow for observation of patients over time, including the course of illness and usefulness of therapies. The objectives of the program are to provide the specialized knowledge, insights, attitudes, and skills required to be an Infectious Diseases expert, and the clinical judgment to provide optimal patient care.
