Vascular Diseases

Video: Ashish Raju, M.D. talks about the importance of diagnosing and treating Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Vascular disease, a major contributor to heart disease and stroke, focuses on medical conditions that affect the circulatory system other than the heart. Carilion Clinic is recognized locally and throughout western Virginia as a leader in vascular care. Our fully-integrated vascular medicine program provides expert care from doctors who have completed extensive training in this medical specialty.

Vascular medicine focuses on care of the arteries (which carry blood from the heart to the tissues), the veins (bringing blood back to the heart) and the lymphatic system (carrying lymphatic fluid throughout the body).

Our vascular specialists work closely with our cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons to deliver a highly coordinated, patient-centered approach to care. Carilion's Vascular Medicine Clinic integrates care from our interventional radiology and cardiac catheterization teams for comprehensive imaging studies, testing, and treatment for an array of vascular diseases.

Among the vascular conditions we treat:

  • Aneurysm, an abnormal bulge in the wall of a blood vessel. While aneurysm can occur anywhere in the body, they are most often found in the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis, a blood clot that occurs deep inside a vein, most often in the leg.
  • Peripheral Artery Disease, when plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to your head, organs and limbs.
  • Varicose Veins, large, swollen blue or purple veins under the skin in which blood has backed up due to a faulty valve. Varicose veins are most commonly found in the legs.

If arteries are narrowed, blocked, enlarged, or malformed, vascular testing will determine the affected areas. Vascular tests include:

  • Angiograms
  • CT angiography
  • MR angiography
  • Duplex ultrasound

Vascular surgeons at Carilion are committed to research and ongoing education in their field. Our specialists use traditional and minimally invasive techniques to image, diagnose, and treat vascular conditions.
